कन्नूर जिले में इज़हिमाला (एषिमला ) सात पर्बतों की एक श्रृंखला कही गई है भारतीय नौसेना अकादमी यहां अवस्थित है। वैसे ही सबरीमला वास्तव में शबरी -माला (शबरी परबत है ).जनश्रुति है भगवान् श्रीराम वनवास की अवधि में सीता को खोजते खोजते यहां भी पहुंचे थे।
भगवान् अय्यापन मोहिनी रूप में विष्णु और भगवान् शंकर से उत्पन्न अवतार माने जाते हैं।
अब इस पूजास्थल को सबरीमाला श्री अय्याप्पासामी टेम्पल कहा जाने लगा है। सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने जनास्था के साथ खिलवाड़ करते हुए उन रक्तरंगियों का ही हौसला बढ़ाया है जो आज केरल प्रदेश की शांति और समाज व्यवस्था ,सनातन परम्पराओं पर प्रहार करते रहने के लिए जाने जाते हैं।

The most talked about South Indian temple of the day is Sabarimala temple. This temple is located in the Periyar Tiger Reserve forest in Pattanamthitta district of Kerala. The Supreme Court in September ordered the Sabarimala temple administration to
throw it open to women of all age declaring unconstitutional a Kerala law that banned entry of menstruating women in the shrine.
Since November 21, 2016, this Kerala shrine is officially called the Sabarimala Sree Ayyappaswamy Temple. It was previously named as the Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple. But the temple is better known by its first name, Sabarimala.
The word Sabarimala literally means the hills of Shabari, a devotee of Lord Ram mentioned in epic Ramayan. As the legend goes, Lord Ram visited Shabari in this forest while he was on his way to Lanka to rescue his Sita, who had been kidnapped by demon king Ravan.
